Incorporated in 1875 as a Second Class Township under the Pennsylvania Municipal Code, Harmar Township was named after Harmar Denny, a congressman from 1829 to 1837 and the son of Ebenezer Denny, a General in the Revolutionary War. Harmar Township is conveniently located 13 miles northeast of Pittsburgh at the Allegheny Valley interchange of the Pennsylvania Turnpike and the Route 28 Expressway.
